The Synergy backpack by Swiss Gear is an excellent backpack for college students. This bag features pockets galore; with one main section big enough to fit a binder, three or four textbooks, and multiple folders. The zippered pocket on the top of the main compartment takes advantage of what is normally dead space in other bags, I find this area ideal for flash cards and extra highlighters.
The compartment behind this one is primarily storage for a laptop computer, with extra padding around the holster, and a snap in strap to keep your machine in place. Although Swiss says that this area fits most computers up to 17", my 15.4" HP goes to the top of the bag, I can't imagine a 17" actually being able to fit. There is another zippered pocket in this main compartment, which fits my power cord and mobile mouse nicely.
The main handle highlights the bag's durability, with a stainless-steel cable running through the padding, insuring your handle won't break on you and send you laptop crashing to the ground.
There are many other pockets all over this bag. An organization pocket for pens, id cards and what not, side pockets for water bottles, and a quick-access pocket at the top for you iPod and other essentials.
The bottom of the bag is made of a heavy-duty plastic covering that minimizes the chance of tearing. All the zippered areas are double-stitched, with over-sized, heavy-duty zippers that won't give out any time soon.All this heavy fabrics and zippers do add to the weight of the bag when it is empty, but the ergonomic, padded shoulder straps makes it all bearable.
Prices for this bag range considerably, I have found it ranging from $50 to $100, so shop around!
