The fix third person action shooters were needing
Bewertet am: Jul 25, 2000
Before I begin this, I want to let everybody know that I don?t like third person action games very much.
Why? Well, mainly because of two things: the controls and the camera angles.
This kind of games has been out there since 1995, but although there were many titles released since that year, none of them fully corrected these two problems.
There are two types of games on this action subgenre, the character-based ones (with the camera angle set behind the main character, a la Tomb Raider) and the camera-based ones (Nocturne, Star Trek: Hidden Evil), the first ones being the ones I dislike more. And Urban Chaos (UC) is one of these games!
But there are certain things that let me like this game, or at least be nice towards it while writing this.
Plot 7/10
The story revolves around D?arci Stern, an enthusiastic rookie from the Union City police department, who is destined to save his beloved city from the evil that threatens to overrun it.
The first three missions are tutorials where you learn D?arci?s movements, how to fight and even to drive. Then, the serious action begins. (There will be more advanced tutorials later on).
Firstly, you will have to prove good to the high rank police officers that will give you some missions to see how good you really are. Along the way you will discover some kind of apocalyptic sect, and realize they are behind all the mindless attacks against the citizens and, of course, you have to stop them.
Graphics 7/10
Though not superb, the graphics engine does its job very well. It can truly immerse players in the slum styled city. The game has other good features as well, like the smoking effects or the wind blowing leaves all over the Union?s streets. The latter gets too repetitive after awhile though.
On the other hand the character faces are cartoonish, and they don?t move their lips while talking.
Sound 7/10
The soundtracks are nice and the rhythms go with the action. However programmers could have used the third person perspective for a more believable sound experience, such as actually hearing bullets coming from different directions or the echo of people walking indoor areas.
Gameplay 6/10
As I said before, Urban Chaos is a character-based third person game. And this is mainly the reason why I like it, for it fixes the main problem that ruined this kind of games since their first creation. The horrible camera angles from Tomb Raider that made you sick are no longer present here. Instead, the game?s perspective regulates itself depending on how you move, meaning you won?t have to waste half an hour to fit the camera to your needs (although you still have this option if you want to).
The way the characters perform jumps, run and fight is very realistic, but they are nothing compared to the SWAT guys sneaking around the corners.
And the controls still leave something to be desired, but you will see many improvements in this field too (provided you have played Tomb Raider or some clone of the sort first).
Sometimes the controls get crazy and stop responding for awhile, and after that lag, D?arci does all the movements at once. Not very clear, is it? Let?s say you are running and have a bad guy in front of you, then the controls stop responding, you don?t notice and press the attack, and movement buttons anyway. The game still without responding, and then it quickly performs all the movements you?ve done just in one second, but the baddie in question has already moved, so you end up kicking the air.
Tech 3/10
The only thing I would like PC game developers to copy from the consoles is the aggressively quick load times, and UC borrows this formula satisfactorily.
Unfortunately, it also copies all the annoying ?features? of these gaming platforms like the just-a-few-slots saving option (what do we have our f**ing big hard disks for???), lack of in-game saving option, or creepy AI (consoles can?t process as much data as PC?s so they take out some of this data by dumbing down the AI).
Replay Value 6/10
Certain missions are a lot of fun and can be played again many times. But there are others that get too repetitive even the first time you play them (go there, kill bad guy, come here again, punch bad guy, etc).
Conclusion
If you disliked Tomb Raider but still want a game that fixes most of its problems you should buy Urban Chaos. And if you liked Tomb Raider but are tired of its senseless climbing and jumping you must buy Urban Chaos.
