Why Would You Spend That Kind Of Money On Sunglasses?

Bewertet am: Jun 4, 2007

Fazit:  High performance protection and style - Look good and protect your vision!
There are two good reasons for laying out big bucks for Oakley sunglasses: high-status style or high performance. Look good and protect your vision!

High-status fashion style

Please indulge me; fashion and clothing accessories are not among my strong suits. I am also not exactly sure what brought on the change in sunglasses style from aviator to wraparound, it could have either been the large number of new veterans returning from the searing sun and sands of Iraq, or it could have been that manufacturers found some new way for us all to look cool. Either way, Oakley is leading the way in must have sunglasses.

If you are wearing sunglasses in trendy public areas they had better have an Oakley O in relief on the frames. Sure, you can try to get away with an imitation brand from Dollar General, but rest assured you will only get away with it for a brief glance. The fashion police will spot you for what you are, you are trying to get away cheap.

Face it; Oakley M Frame sunglasses make you look good, they have a distinctive look of futuristic, expensive Italian horsepower and sophistication. It is a look that says you might have just driven up in a Ferrari Testarossa or riding a Ducati ST3. Their lines and sweptback style fool the on-looking eye into believing your face has that chiseled look of the classic fashion model, or at least draw those eyes away from my own facial imperfections brought about by years of interesting lifestyle. Again, either way, Oakley M Frame look good and make you look good. Yes, you can gild the lily!

High Performance

I learned about Oakley sunglasses during my third trip to the Middle East. Yep, the good old US Army "loaned" me a pair! Wondering why there was a move away from wire framed aviator style sunglasses, I did a little digging to find out.

Oakley High Performance

Wadding through their website I spotted that they surpass "American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Industrial Standards for high-mass and high-velocity impact protection. All lenses are made of pure Plutonite?, a proprietary material that offers the highest level of optical clarity available in eyewear. You get razor-sharp clarity at all angles of view, which maximize peripheral vision and protection against sun, wind and side impact. Oakley lenses exceed US Government ANSI Z87.1 standards for impact resistance, optical clarity and UV protection." I know that sounds pretty neat, but what does that mean?

Impact Protection

Living an active lifestyle your eyes can be subjected to continual destructive hazards. Driving a convertible, riding a motorcycle or horse, walking in high wind conditions, target shooting, even sticking your head out of the window of your family car or the door of a moving Blackhawk helicopter (OK, that Blackhawk might not happen in your everyday lifestyle) all increase your potential for being plummeted by high velocity flying debris. Dust is bad, but sand is actually small rocks! It is not only the Red Rider BB rifle your mother warned you about, that stuff in the air can put your eye out. Part of that ANSI standard includes a "high-mass impact test that requires that the lens be hit by a 500-gram metal spike (over a pound of weight) dropped from a height of 51.2 inches (over four feet). To pass the test, no frame parts or lens fragments that could damage the eye may be ejected during impact." What does that mean to you? It means that your eyes are protected from the debris attacking your eyes from flying dust, sand, and ashes have a harder time getting to your eyes. A lesser priority by some, that also means that your high-dollar investment sunglasses should last until you lose them.

UV Protection

I am not a doctor, but like everyone else, I have been warned about overdoses of UV radiation. UV radiation has been linked to cataracts, inner eye macular degeneration and cataract. Those conditions either stop light being properly processed by the eye and brain. In time, your vision can become opaque or image patterns are improperly transmitted to the brain. Either way you do not see as well. Oakley sunglasses claim to block 100% of all UV radiation.

Lens Clarity

You have to be able to see through your sunglasses. You also want to be able to see what is really there. I know that most people have seen the "funhouse" mirrors that distort the image. Well a curved lens has a tendency to do the same thing. That curve can "bend" the incoming light just like funhouse mirror. This was a serious obstacle auto makers have had to overcome with wraparound windshields, and so have wraparound sunglass makers. That soldier on patrol need to be completely sure of where any target really is in his sights. When something is sneaking up on you in your peripheral vision you want to know exactly what and where it is. Heck, I want you to be able to see me as I overtake your car on the freeway! Clear peripheral vision is a good thing.

Polarization and Tints

Sunglasses are usually worn to remove the glare and overpowering brightness of the sun. They are also worn to protect the eyes from those other elements like wind and airborne debris. Polarization, in a nutshell, messes with they way light wave travel through the lenses so that glare is reduced or eliminated. Tints pretty much absorb light so as to reduce its intensity. Oakley lenses come in a range of tints, from dark to clear, for any level of light. Lenses are quickly and easily changed to deal with changing environments.

M Frame Array Case

An optional semi-rigid nylon case is available to store all M Frames and your selection of lenses. This allows for bringing along all the proper tinted lenses you will need to cover the expected conditions. Remember, during any activity there is a chance that the light levels will change and you will still need UV and impact protection. It is a good idea, and I do recommend the purchase.

In Use Comfort

During a lot of high energy activities there is a risk of accidents. Cycling, motorcycling, horseback riding, driving all involve the risk of body impact. For these activities wearing sunglasses that do not hook around the ears is usually recommended. You really do want those glasses to be thrown away from your face before impact. Shape edges on broken sunglasses can violate the tender tissues of the eyes. You also want those sunglasses to remain in place during quick head movements. Oh yeah, you would rather they did not pinch or otherwise bother your head or ears. The Oakley M Frames do a great job of all three. Not once have any of my Oakley sunglasses failed to stay in place in high winds, and then have come off when I embarrassed myself falling into a hole. Adding in their light weight, I have found that I can wear them for hours on end without undue discomfort.

In Use With A Nose

Oakley M Frame sunglass lenses have a detachable nose piece that molds to the shape of your nose. That spreads the load of the glasses over a larger area than the normal pads found on most glasses. It also helps seal out possible debris getting past the lenses to your eyes. This returns a longer comfort time for the wearer. It also leaves a "distraction" between your eyes. While I have not found it objectionable during most activities, it does bother me while riding a motorcycle so I do remove it for that activity. One day I might get used to it, but it has not happened yet.

In Use Protection

These are not goggles. Wind, dust, ashes, sand, and other debris will find their way around the Oakley lenses. Please do not expect the protection found in true safety goggles with any wraparound sunglasses, including the Oakley M Frames. But I have found that they are much superior to my old aviator style sunglasses in that respect. Glare from the sides is drastically cut down due to that wraparound shape, and I have notice no distortion in either direct or peripheral view. Remember, good peripheral vision protects not only the driver but all innocent bystanders during motor vehicle operation.

In Use Glare

The polarized lenses work well in what I would call normal use. No, I do not recommend using them to stare directly into the sun or while welding. I have found that I can ride or drive directly into the sun with little head turning to keep away from that direct stare. Reflected glare from pavement and the shiny hood of my car are almost totally eliminated. That range of lens tints pays dividends in the comfort department. I use about three different ones for different conditions. Remember, Oakley offers different tints for different levels of expected light – use the right one for the expected environment. My experience has been that my eyes tire much less quickly with these sunglasses.

In Use Style

You might not want to publicly admit it, but you at least do not want to be ashamed of the purchase. Face it; anytime you spend big bucks for an item you do want it to look good. I cannot overstate that these sunglasses do make one look good. The lines and curves heighten that high performance look to even a face like mine. I like the look and so will those of us who have to look from the other side.
