I purchased the Viking 936 because I wanted a machine that would do a coverstitch. I have been very pleased with this machine.
Not only does it make a beautiful coverstitch, but the 2,3 and 4 thread overlock stitches are perfect! I have seen a marked improvement over my other serger, better stitch quality, good tension and stronger serged seams. The 2 and 3 thread rolled hem is absolutely beautiful.
This machine is computerized, and automatically sets the tensions and differential based upon your selections. If you need to *tweak* the auto settings, you can scroll through the menu and make the changes for the effect you desire. You can also save specific settings in one of the memory spots.
The only drawback I found to this machine is you have to change the sewing plate and foot when you want to set it up for a coverstitch. Initially this took some time to learn, but after a few conversions, now it takes about 3-5 minutes.
I sew for myself and my children and found this machine to be a wonderful value for the money. While there may be sergers on the market right now that are easier to convert to coverstitch, none are as inexpensive as this machine. For my use, I found the cost savings outweighed the little extra time it takes to convert to coverstitch.
